The next pope

Its been some days now three days now  to be exact we have heard the news of the sudden resignation of pope Benedict XVI.
We have heard in the news that the middle of march is the deadline set to select the new bishop of Rome.That makes it three(3) weeks from now that we will have the leader of both the state the (Vatican) and the Church (Catholicism) will have its king sitting on the throne in the Vatican. It would be prudent to note that Catholic means Universal church keep this in mind.

I have been studying Daniel 11:40-45 for the past four years now and  it has proven truly to line up with the history of 1798 up to this time. Thus far one verse has predicted not almost but dead on all the historical events that tell us we are in the closing moments of earth's history. The reason why i have confidence in one verse ie verse 40 that its accurate is because we have seen the history from Daniel 11:1 yes verse one to 39 as accurate as the sun's position in the sky. Gods word we can trust.
While I am not making any prophetic forecast i have reason to believe that the next Pope could come from the United States of America. I could be wrong. Maybe the pope coming from anywhere in the world will still lead to the things we know concerning America in Revelation 13. However the time is ripe for Pope coming from America because all the entities in bible prophecy are ready to fulfil their roles.

The Bible says Dan 11:41  HE shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.

We are going to deal with this one phrase "HE shall enter also into the glorious land"

The two links above tells us who the "HE" in verse 41 is the King Of  The North. We have ascertain from the Bible that the King of the North at the end of the world is the Papacy see the links above.

Now Holy Scripture says He shall enter into the the GLORIOUS LAND in verse 41.

Lets look in the bible to see  where we can find in ancient times by its characteristics we can determine the modern Glorious land.

• PLEASANT LANDS .
• GOODLY LANDS.
• PLACES OF PROMINENCE.

HISTORY AND BIBLE PROPHECY TELLS US WHERE THE GLORIOUS LAND WAS

Dan 8:8  Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven. (ie East,West, North and South)
Daniel 8:9. And out of one of them (winds) came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward
the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant [land].

The book of Daniel,chapter 2 tells us the kingdoms that would rule the earth until the end of time.
The History goes like this ,Heads of Gold Babylon, Chest and arms of Silver Medio Persia, Belly and thighs of brass Greece, then Legs of Iron Pagan Rome,Then Iron and clay feet of Papal Rome up to the papal removal as a world power in 1798. This was the deadly wound described in Revelation 13 inflicted on the first beast ,the great and terrible beast. The toes in Daniel 2  represent Modern Rome, the system that resembles old ancient Rome (Iron kingdom), but has the influence of a church (Iron mixed with clay kingdom) is where we see the world divided into 10 regions.This is the New World Order according to Bible.

Daniel 11, the chapter that we are now looking over goes through most of that history starting from Grecian Empire under the rule of Alexander the Great.  Daniel 8:8 shows t the Grecian kingdom with the Notable Horn Alexamder himself . Then his kingdom Greece was divided into four (4) warring factions under Alexander's four great Generals historically know as Lysimacous ,Cassander Seleucius and  Ptolemy (P silent), this explanation is given in the follwing verses if you mouse over
(Daniel 8:20, Daniel 8:21,  Daniel 8:22,  Daniel 8:23,  Daniel 8:24).This is how Greece under the Great Alexander's Grecian kingdom came to its end as a ruling kingdom on the earth.


The kingdom that followed is Pagan Rome, the Little horn he magnify its self.
Dan 8:9  And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.
Dan 8:10  And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.
Dan 8:11  Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host.

This is Rome pagan that persecuted the disciples. Saul was the instrument under Rome that persecuted the (stars of heaven the apostles and followers of Christ) Acts7:58 and Act8:1,Acts 8:3, Acts 9:1,Dan 12:3
It was Rome pagan via the Roman Caesars that magnify itself above the Prince of the Host (Christ) to kill him in John 19:10

It was pagan Rome that Waxed Great to south Egypt ,towards the East Syria and towards the place that we have been trying to defined as the PLEASANT LAND Palestine in Judea. Now that we  have the events and individual leading up to this Pleasant land we can be sure of its exactness based on the correct historical walk that we just took.
The scripture and History agree that pagan Rome did conquer these three areas at its ascendancy.

1. Egypt “toward the south”
2. Syria “toward the east”
3. Judea “toward the pleasant land”

Bible foretold this would happen after the Babylonian captivity  that Gods people will settled down in the pleasant land  Judea. Now note the characteristics of the pleasant land,with this information we can see where on the planet is the Modern day PLEASANT LAND.

Jeremiah 3:18, 19
In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north (BABYLON) to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers. But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.

Exodus 6:7, 8.
And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that
I [am] the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I [am] the LORD.

Daniel 11:16.
But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed.

The Goodly land is where the Children of God were given was a place of rest and peace, It was a place free from the bondage of torment and slavery where they could worship the God of heaven in peace.It was the the pleasant land the Land where all longed for.

• United States America is where most people in the world wanted to migrate to.
• The USA is a nation of immigrants, people love to go to that land for the American Dream.
• It is USA that many  found solace and peace away from the bondage of Kingly rule and Papal persecution.
• It is the USA that many ran to practice free religion under its great constitutional decree,a document that epitomises freedom both civil and religious and justice for all.
• It is in America where the great beacon of protestantism  burns brightest.
• It is in America where all protestant headquaters are based the USA is the citadel for protestantism.
• It is the America that is represented in Bible prophecy as the Earth (land) that swallowed up the flood of persecution that came after the woman (the church) out of the dragons mouth (Satan). 

GOD SHOWS THE END BY SHOWING US THE BEGINNING ISAIAH 46:9,10 

For Papal Rome to ascend the throne of the earth for the deadly wound to be heal it has to conquer three  geographical obstacles. God shows the end by telling us what the beginning was like .In the beginning of  Roman system Pagan Rome overcame three geographical obstacles.
Daniel  Dan 8:9  And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land. 
Hysterically and prophetically in the Dan 8:9 Rome took out three obstacles to gain the ascendancy on the earth.
Rome did this twice in past histories also in bible you can prove these times.

1st History: Pagan Rome removed three(3) obstacles

1. Egypt “toward the south”
2. Syria “toward the east”
3. Judea “toward the pleasant land”

2nd History: Papal Rome removed three obstacles Removal of the Arian religions
This time via the help of a STATE power,namely Clovis the king of France who became the sword of the papacy setting him upon the throne of the earth  from 538- 1798=1260 days  of Revelation 12:14, Dan_7:25,Daniel 12:7. incidentally it was France that set the Papacy up and France that took him down

1. Huruli.
2. Ostrgoths.
3. Vandals

The Bible says on the Testimony of two witnesses a thing is established. Deut 19:15 ,Deut 17:6 Gen41:32,Heb 10:28.Thus we can safely use this Bible principle that the 1st and second History gives us details of the 3rd History which is yet future. 

Hence History number 3 tells us about Modern Rome .that is Rome in our day.

Modern Rome Must overcome three(3) obstacles.This information is found as well in Daniel 11:40-45 

1. King of the South ( Atheism) 1989 fall of Communism , via John Paul .Accomplished
2. Glorious Land.(American or Protestantism) headquateredif there is such a word in America (future) 
3. Egypt  finally.   Note Egypt represents the World or worldly in Bible prophecy.

Thus the next victim of the Papacy would be the GLORIOUS LAND where the last bastion of  protestantism is headquarterd.
Most protestant churches have already shown allegiance to Rome and some are even responding to the call to come back home to mother Rome,but to have the Papal Head from America sit on the thrown of the Vatican is a step towards the protestant America being overthrown. The papacy will see it as conquest to have the pontifical General come from the United states.
Revelation 13 shows a lamb like Beast with two horns or two instrument of its power, namely Republicanism and Protestantism. This is Freedom of the Republic without Kingly rule and secondly Freedom of Religion specifically protestantism.

But the bible talks of a beast that gives power to the great and terrible beast in Revelation13 that cause the Great and Terrible Beast wounds to Heal.
How is this done ? By forming an IMAGE TO THE BEAST.  You can only form an image to something by forming a replica of its defining characteristics. The Papacy has always been govern as a church and state power . The Papal Sea is church Craft, the Vatican is its territory and state. The Pope hold reigns of both Priest and King.This was once the case with him being such over the whole world and when this was done the blood of Bible believing Christians flow. Heretics (those who do not acknowledge the doctrines and dictates of Rome were behead, flail,burn at the stake,put in prison and suffer all manure of torture too gruesome to pen.  The Joining of church and State by any country will form the image to the beast.And that second beast in Revelation 13 will be the one to cause the deadly wound of the Great and terrible to heal.

Who is this second BEAST POWER IN REVELATION 17 THAT CAUSES THE DEADLY WOUND OF THE PAPAL RULE TO BE HEALED.

Rev 13:11   another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
Rev 13:12  And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

Bible says :Rev_13:14  And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
Rev_13:15  And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

With the lamb like Beast being America,the Pope being American that should make the Dan 11:41 the latter part seamless. The Sunday law a religious law pushed by protestant America under the loving care of an American Pope can certainly move quickly the final events of Earth's history and an image to be the beast is easily formed which will empower once again Papal Rule and Kingly dominion.

Certainly America is speaking like a dragon at this time via its laws and this is what we expect, for a nation speaks via its laws and its ability to CAUSE..as Rev 13:12. All the infrastructure is in place.The laws,Detention centres,taking away of the liberties of the people,even the chief justices are all Catholic except one.
The question is are you ready, have you been cleansed from sin, have you given all to Jesus.The only ONE that can save you or keep you saved is Christ in the heart. No other weapon can prevent the works of Satan to have its way .We know from history when the Papacy sitteth on the throne of the earth persecution starts on Bible believing Christians who will then be named as in the past histories as Heretics.

He will enter into the Glorious Land as Daniel 11:41 says.The "how "is probably what we will see in the next 3 weeks. If the Pope is an American and one American , if he is selected the Papacy can bring down Protestantism easy from that point on. the Seat of Protestant America will easily pay homage to an pope of American origin . Protestant who are not protesting anymore is already stretching its hand across the gulf to clasp hands with the Papacy , A Vatican II influenced protestants will easily give over to the "New Catholic Evangelistic thrust. "All the World will wonder after the Beast ".  We wait and see

Even if the Pope is not an American Bible prophecy remains accurate while details human reasoning remain sketchy.

Calculations prove July 27th 1449+ 391yrs and 15 days lands us in August 11th, 1840. This prophecy of the fall of the Ottomans empire was fulfilled to the exact day. 
 
It is with this most watched and talked about time prophecy that lead even heathens to believe the 2300 days doctrine to be true in 1840-44. Thus if there were times during the past 2 woes for Gods people to be receiving truth and living by such truths, then in the 3rd woe which we see started in 911 a sealing must be going on with Gods people presently.

1. On Mt Carmel Elijah gave a Sealing message.If If Baal Be God serve him if God be God serve Him.
2. In Christ time John the Baptist the 2nd Elijah was given a sealing message: bring forth fruit evidence of repentance,the Messiah cometh.
3. The message of the 3rd Elijah (Malachi 4:5) is no different. Prepare to meat thy God and it comes upon the Church first 1Timothy3:15 ,Ezekiel9:6

Now note carefully Islam  is angering the nations again at this time as it distressed  the nations  from 1449-1840. This History is being repeated.  The world powers will seek a conclusive way together to deal with Islam as they did in the past. What started in 911 was the beginning of the 3rd and final woe. Islam by the way labels this period in there own words "the Last and Final Great Jihad". Islam will be dealt with by a world wide effort when they  becomes unbearable. Bible shows the feelings of the Roman empire under the scourge of Islam in Rev 9:6  And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.   This is the torment of Islam, this is terrorism to have men live in fear. And this is what is taking place now as the mighty and the great army is stirring. 

The prophecy of  the Sons of Ishmael the children of the East ,Islam is fulfilling now as we speak .
Gen 16:12  And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. 

It is by this angering of the nations the world will come together ,religions will have all things in common, then we will  see the Protestant America stretching its hand across the gulf to take hold of the hand of the Papal power whose deadly wound would be healed then we have the Sunday Law crisis. And the persecution of the those who follow the commandments of God rather than the commandments of men.

Regarding the change from the observance of the Jewish Sabbath to the Christian Sunday, I wish to draw your attention to the facts:
(1) That Protestants, who accept the Bible as the only rule of faith and religion, should by all means go back to the observance of the Sabbath. The fact that they do not, but on the contrary observe the Sunday, stultifies them in the eyes of every thinking man.
(2) We Catholics do not accept the Bible as the only rule of faith. Besides the Bible we have the living Church, the authority of the Church, as a rule to guide us. We say this Church, instituted by Christ, to teach and guide men through life, has the right to change the Ceremonial laws of the Old Testament and hence, we accept her change of the Sabbath to the Sunday. We frankly say, "Yes, the Church made this change, made this law, as she made many other laws, for instance, the Friday Abstinence, the unmarried priesthood, the laws concerning mixed marriages, the regulation of Catholic marriages, and a thousand other laws."
(3) We also say that of all Protestants, the Seventh-day Adventist are the only group that reason correctly and are consistent with their teachings. It is always somewhat laughable to see the Protestant Churches, in pulpit and legislature, demand the observance of Sunday, of which there is nothing in the Bible.

Mr. James L. Day first heard the teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church at an evangelistic meeting in Thomaston, Georgia in 1934. Upon hearing the sermon on the change of the Sabbath he was greatly perplexed and thought the way to find out for himself the truth of the matter was to write to the Pope.
This letter was written by Mr. Day personally, upon his own initiative, to Pope Pius XI, who was then the ruling Pope of the Catholic Church. He said he waited thirty days for a reply and then received this letter from the editor of THE CATHOLIC EXTENSION, which is printed under Mr. Day's letter. The Pope had sent Mr. Day's letter to Mr. Tramer, who was editor of the Question Box of this magazine, for reply. The answer was sent under the blessing of the pope.

I observe with particular pleasure the view you have taken of the immunity of Religion from civil jurisdiction, in every case where it does not trespass on private rights or the public peace. This has always been a favorite principle with me; and it was not with my approbation, that the deviation from it took place in Congs., when they appointed Chaplains, to be paid from the Natl. Treasury. It would have been a much better proof to their Constituents of their pious feeling if the members had contributed for the purpose, a pittance from their own pockets. As the precedent is not likely to be rescinded, the best that can now be done, may be to apply to the Constn. the maxim of the law, de minimis non curat. There has been another deviation from the strict principle in the Executive Proclamations of fasts & festivals, so far, at least, as they have spoken the language of injunction, or have lost sight of the equality of all religious sects in the eye of the Constitution. Whilst I was honored with the Executive Trust I found it necessary on more than one occasion to follow the example of predecessors. But I was always careful to make the Proclamations absolutely indiscriminate, and merely recommendatory; or rather mere designations of a day, on which all who thought proper might unite in consecrating it to religious purposes, according to their own faith & forms. In this sense, I presume you reserve to the Govt. a right to appoint particular days for religious worship throughout the State, without any penal sanction enforcing the worship. I know not what may be the way of thinking on this subject in Louisiana. I should suppose the Catholic portion of the people, at least, as a small & even unpopular sect in the U. S., would rally, as they did in Virga. when religious liberty was a Legislative topic, to its broadest principle. Notwithstanding the general progress made within the two last centuries in favour of this branch of liberty, & the full establishment of it, in some parts of our Country, there remains in others a strong bias towards the old error, that without some sort of alliance or coalition between Govt. & Religion neither can be duly supported. Such indeed is the tendency to such a coalition, and such its corrupting influence on both the parties, that the danger cannot be too carefully guarded agst. And in a Govt. of opinion, like ours, the only effectual guard must be found in the soundness and stability of the general opinion on the subject. Every new & successful example therefore of a perfect separation between ecclesiastical and civil matters, is of importance. And I have no doubt that every new example, will succeed, as every past one has done, in shewing that religion & Govt. will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together. It was the belief of all sects at one time that the establishment of Religion by law, was right & necessary; that the true religion ought to be established in exclusion of every other; And that the only question to be decided was which was the true religion. The example of Holland proved that a toleration of sects, dissenting from the established sect, was safe & even useful. The example of the Colonies, now States, which rejected religious establishments altogether, proved that all Sects might be safely & advantageously put on a footing of equal & entire freedom; and a continuance of their example since the declaration of Independence, has shewn that its success in Colonies was not to be ascribed to their connection with the parent Country. If a further confirmation of the truth could be wanted, it is to be found in the examples furnished by the States, which have abolished their religious establishments. I cannot speak particularly of any of the cases excepting that of Virga. where it is impossible to deny that Religion prevails with more zeal, and a more exemplary priesthood than it ever did when established and patronised by Public authority. We are teaching the world the great truth that Govts. do better without Kings & Nobles than with them. The merit will be doubled by the other lesson that Religion flourishes in greater purity, without than with the aid of Govt.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him : for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you." The Sunday Law will be accepted by ALL nations when the turmoil of this world is seen.

     When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by them in common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy, and the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result. . . .  {LDE 131.1}

     To secure popularity and patronage, legislators will yield to the demand for a Sunday law....By the

                            The Whole World
                        Will Support Sunday Legislation


     The wicked . . . declared that they had the truth, that miracles were among them, that angels from heaven talked with them and walked with them, that great power and signs and wonders were performed among them, and that this was the temporal millennium that they had been expecting so long. Ahh a new year . Is this not the best time to past new laws..

Its a period of transition in the mind of men, personal resolutions are being made,new goals are being set.Of course a few new laws here and there would not be rejected.
Since every one is in this mood of newness why not impose some new legistlations.

Legislation are a good way to control the masses. Of course one must impose them bit by bit (the frog in the seething pot syndrome) sometimes in stealth would help keep the opposition quiet.

Rome must gain control of the whole World. By saying Rome I mean the Roman Catholic System lead by the Priestly kings we know today as Popes. For the deadly wound will be healed and every effort to hasten the ascension of the Romish religion is being put in place ( Revelation 13:12). For Daniel 11:40-45 will come to past.

Now the Roman church does not come to sit on the throne of the earth without the help of the super power of the world.
The book of Revelation talks about a second political power ,a second beast different from the first rising up from the "earth" as oppose to the 1st beast rising up from among many people symbolically called "out from the sea"..
Bible says : Revelation 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.  For this on numerous occasions we have identified solidly as America with its two horns Republicanism and protestantism.

Now this beast with two horns assist the first Beast the Papacy Roman Catholic system regain its power! How ? Read what the bible says.

A country  or a super power can only cause another nation to do what it says by its military strength. It can also cause the citizenry of its own land to respond to demands based on its legislative arm and the passing of  Laws.

The New world Government will come into being as the Bible says but its weapon of control would be laws.

The laws that are being implemented rushed at this time are design not so much to protect us but to control us.
Very soon America will create a model of which the world will addopt, already endorsed by the Papacy.
She America is following the dictates of Rome, once the image to the Beast the Papacy is made fully, The world will be forced to adopt this model hook line and sinker ; hence it is at this time when all laws will fall under the guidance and authority of the Pope. America would have effectively put the Roman church on the throne of the earth   once again.
It is at this time the Deadly wound would have been healed and Daniel 11:40-45 would be fulfilled with verse 44 where she the Catholic System will again implement its persecution of "heretics" being officially head of the world church and the world governent.
The marriage of church and state would be consummated.Thus those who follow the commandments of God the Mordecais if you may rather than the dictates of Bishops and Priest the Hamans will suffer persecution.

Mr King makes the erroneous point indirectly that Sunday is the Sabbath. Glenn Beck not only repeats but re-emphasize that said view and also add some meat to it if you listen clearly.

This is a typical brainwash thesis antitheses procedure that has worked on many. The Beck and King duo has attain the desired effect. Already lodged into the subconscious minds of the irreligious and the Atheist and the unconcerned listeners is the error -Sunday is the Sabbath.

The history of nations that one after another have occupied their allotted time and place, unconsciously witnessing to the truth of which they themselves knew not the meaning, speaks to us. To every nation and to every individual of today God has assigned a place in His great plan. Today men and nations are being measured by the plummet in the hand of Him who makes no mistake. All are by their own choice deciding their destiny, and God is overruling all for the accomplishment of His purposes.
The history which the great I AM has marked out in His word, uniting link after link in the prophetic chain, from eternity in the past to eternity in the future, tells us where we are today in the procession of the ages, and what may be expected in the time to come. All that prophecy has foretold as coming to pass, until the present time, has been traced on the pages of history, and we may be assured that all which is yet to come will be fulfilled in its order. Satan is working towards one goal.

May we make seek the assistance of Christ the loving saviour in making our garments white in preparation to meet the judgements that are about to fall on this earth.

Fear not those who can kill the body.

In its initial 1993 version the Directive stipulated that Sunday should be « in principle » the weekly day of rest for European workers. This very class put forth the claim that the fast-spreading corruption is largely attributable to the desecration of the so-called "Christian sabbath" and that the enforcement of Sunday observance would

Protestantism and
Catholicism Act in Concert


Protestantism shall give the hand of fellowship to the Roman power. Then there will be a law against the Sabbath of God's creation, and then it is that God will do His "strange work" in the earth.--7BC 910 (1886). {LDE 130.1}
How the Roman church can clear herself from the charge of idolatry we cannot see. . . . And this is the religion which Protestants are beginning to look upon with so much favor, and which will eventually be united with Protestantism. This union will not, however, be effected by a change in Catholicism, for Rome never changes. She claims infallibility. It is Protestantism that will change. The adoption of liberal ideas on its part will bring it where it can clasp the hand of Catholicism.--RH June 1, 1886. {LDE 130.2}
The professed Protestant world will form a confederacy with the man of sin, and the church and the world will be in corrupt harmony.--7BC 975 (1891). {LDE 130.3}

Laws enforcing the observance of Sunday as the Sabbath will bring about a national apostasy from the principles of republicanism upon which the government has been founded. The religion of the papacy will be accepted by the rulers, and the law of God will be made void.--7MR 192 (1906). {LDE 132.1}

As the approach of the Roman armies was a sign to the disciples of the impending destruction of Jerusalem, so may this apostasy be a sign to us that the limit of God's forbearance is reached.--5T 451 (1885). {LDE 133.1}
We must take a firm stand that we will not reverence the first day of the week as the Sabbath, for it is not the day that was blessed and sanctified by Jehovah, and in reverencing Sunday we should place ourselves on the side of the great deceiver.... {LDE 133.2}

'Even Atheists Need to Switch Off on Sundays'

Germany's highest court has ruled that Sunday should be kept as a day of rest and has overturned a Berlin law easing restrictions on Sunday shopping. Most German newspapers on Wednesday greet the ruling, some for reasons of religion and tradition, others out of a concern for workers' rights.

Many visitors to Germany can find themselves standing outside a closed department store, perplexed to find that they cannot do a bit of shopping during their weekend trip. This is a result of Germany's long-held resistance to Sunday shopping even in the face of growing consumerism.

Yet many of Germany's 16 states have already made some exceptions, allowing stores to open a few Sundays a year. And in Berlin the city government had gone the furthest in chipping away at the ban on Sunday trading. In 2006 the German capital gave the green light for retailers to open on 10 Sundays a year, including the four Advent Sundays preceding Christmas.

However, Germany's Constitutional Court has now upheld a complaint made by the country's Catholic and Protestant churches, based on a clause in the German constitution that Sunday should be a day of rest and "spiritual elevation."

The court on Tuesday decided in favor of the churches, saying that Sunday opening should not take place four weeks in a row. The ruling will not affect shopping this December, but would come into force next year. However, the ruling did not overturn completely the principle of limited Sunday store opening.

The labor unions had joined the churches in their campaign to ring-fence Sunday as a day off for the nation. However, their focus was not on protecting the right to practise religion, but rather on protecting workers in the retail sector from having to work on Sundays, sometimes the only day they might get to spend with other members of their family. The services union Verdi greeted Tuesday's ruling with "relief and joy," saying this was a boon to shopworkers and their families.

German papers on Wednesday are broadly in favor of the ruling, though their reasons for supporting the court's decision are strikingly different.

The center-right Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes:

"The Constitutional Court had to overthrow the Berlin law. ... The judgement was not 'out of touch with reality,' as the Berlin Chamber of Commerce claims, but is actually very closely in touch with real life. The great diversity of working lives brings with it the fact that members of a single family are forced into different and sometimes incompatible working hours. If the state does not use some of its regulatory power to give a dependable rhythm to at least one free day -- and that is still Sunday -- then the family faces the threat of being pulled further apart."

"If they have no time with each other and for each other, then the formal notion of belonging together loses value. This danger faces many families in society. … The fact that in the face of growing commercialization and fewer jobs hardly any employee ever dares to ask for a free Saturday, led the labor unions to join the churches in their campaign -- with noticeable success."

The conservative Die Welt writes:

"The churches have argued correctly that employees in the retail sector are not given the possibility of organizing their Advent Sundays according to Christian principles: going to church, being involved in the community, singing and reading aloud. It is part of religious freedom to be able to do these things."

"The judges did not just endorse the division of time marked by Christianity, but also the necessity for this division. There is no ambiguity about this weekly rhythm. We people as social animals are duty bound and justified in dividing our time together. It is good to have free time together, it helps us to live as the social beings that we are."

The center-left Süddeutsche Zeitung writes:

"The judgement sounds antiquated, maddeningly unmodern and pretty patronizing. It tells citizens when they are allowed to shop, and when they are not. It makes shopping on a Sunday an exception. It is a ruling that goes against the economic liberal zeitgeist and is a ruling against the round-the-clock commercialization of life."

"Yet, the ruling is humane. It is an act in favor of the public spirit. … Those who regularly go shopping on Sundays today will have to work regularly on Sundays tomorrow."

"It may sound old fashioned but it is still correct: Sunday is Sunday because it is unlike other days. This is not about tradition or religion or a social heritage. Sunday is more than just a day off for individuals. It that were so, then it wouldn't matter if someone took a day off on Tuesday or Thursday. It is a day to synchronize society, that is what makes it so important. Without Sunday, every day would be a working day and a fixed point in the week would disappear. Of course there can be exceptions, there have always been particular professions who work on Sundays. But when the exception becomes the rule, then the commercialization of Sundays will not end at the department stores."

"The court has given everyone the right to a day off on Sundays. You don't have to take it. Everyone can do what they like with it. But it is good to have it."

The Financial Times Deutschland writes:

"The ruling by the Constitutional Court has revived the emotional debate about opening hours of shops on Sundays. That alone is annoying. But even more annoying is that with its strong emphasis on the religiously based day of rest on Sunday, it is interfering in individual and economic freedom."

"Without a doubt the freedom to practise religion is of great value. However, in an increasingly secular society with more and more individualized rhythms of living, it seems an anachronism for the country's highest court to use retail of all things to save the day of rest."

"In the public debate there is too little mention of the freedom of shop owners to keep customers through opening on Sundays, who would otherwise order online. And the freedom of towns to use Sunday opening hours to attract tourists. Or the freedom of customers to decide for themselves if they would rather spend Sundays amidst the crowds in the shopping malls or walking in the forest."

"Appreciating these rights does not mean throwing away the country to the false god of consumerism. It means allowing a debate … about what Sunday really means to us. That includes protecting the rights of salespeople, paying them extra for working on Sundays and not putting anyone under pressure to work on Sunday."

"If this is achieved, then it is high time that Sunday opening hours are no longer discussed in terms of belief but rationally."

The left-leaning Die Tageszeitung, which is based in Berlin, writes:

"Sunday as a day off is a great gift. The treadmill is closed for 24 hours. The court has given relaxation, rest and 'spiritual elevation' precedence over the thirst for profit and the right to a consumer fix. However, it made it clear in its ruling that Sunday was not just for those who wanted to practise their religion undisturbed. It is also to play cards, go for a walk or simply to laze around. After all even the strictest atheist needs the switching off that Sundays allow."
